Mykolaiv

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces have shelled Mykolaiv International Airport at least 10 times with the Grad and Smerch rocket launchers.

During the shelling on March 28, Russian missiles almost completely destroyed the airport. The main building, the terminal, and the control tower are not subject to repair.

On February 27, Russian forces tried to establish control over the airport, but their attack was repelled by the Armed Forces, territorial defense units, and police. On March 9, they attacked the airport again. Ukrainian forces repelled this assault.

Mykolaiv Airport was built in 1944. In the beginning, it was used for military purposes only. But in 1960, it became a freight and passenger airport. From the 1980s onwards, the airport underwent several improvements and reconstructions: the tarmac, the boarding terminal, and the runway were modernized and their capacities were enlarged. In 2018, flights from and to the Mykolaiv International Airport were resumed after a five-year break. New companies were opening their flights to Mykolaiv.
