Northern Saltivka

24 February 2022

Kharkiv

Residential district in the northeast of Kharkiv is one of the youngest and most densely populated districts of the city.

But now it is called a ghost district because it is the most destroyed district of Kharkiv. 70% of the buildings here are damaged. Of 4,000 buildings damaged in Kharkiv, the majority are in Northern Saltivka.

When the Russian full-scale invasion began a year ago, 200,000 people lived in Northern Saltivka. A few months later, only a few thousand remained. The people started to return back only at the end of summer/early autumn when the Ukrainian army pushed Russians far away from the city.

Since Northern Saltivka is located in the north of the city near Okruzhna Road, the Russian military tried to storm Kharkiv from there. The fierce fighting on the approaches to the city began on the morning of February 24, when the Ukrainian army destroyed the first column of Russian military vehicles, and continued until early May when the Ukrainian military liberated villages Ruska Lozova and Tsyrkuny just north of the city. However, the Russians kept shelling Northern Saltivka with artillery until the Kharkiv counteroffensive in September 2022. Yet, until now Russia shells the city with S-300 missiles from the Belgorod region of Russia located just 40 km from the northern edges of Kharkiv.

Northern Saltivka was planned and built between the 1960-1980s. It is primarily a residential district with panel buildings of 9, 12, and 16 floors. One of the largest tram depots in the countries of the former Soviet Union, having an area of 20,8 hectares. is located here. It was almost entirely destroyed by Russian artillery bombardment on August 16.
